Playback
dance performance, 2010, 60'
The technique of lip-syncing plays at being the real thing; yet it consists of disassociating the sound from its actual source so as to avoid any mistakes on stage or to facilitate the execution of impossible choreography while singing. In Playback, Nicole Seiler applies this procedure while encouraging a passionate reflection on image and sound. She has fun with all that is imperfect and poorly executed, using in the opposite sense the sources of sound, giving new meaning to scenic situations and the movements of the six dancers. A game of collage between the dance, the video, the sound-track and text, Playback plays with the novelty of these fresh combinations, making visible the narrative structure of a performance, all the while shaking our normal modes of perception.
