Luup
dance performance, 2023, 15'
What happens when artificial intelligence participates in the creation of a choreography? And when it also plays a part in the musical composition that accompanies it? Based on instructions generated by this AI before each performance, discovered live by the performers, the artistic process unfolds before our eyes and we witness a laboratory of potential relationships between humans and artificial intelligence. For the final part of the performance, the performers ask ChatGPT to suggest a track to dance to, in order to highlight the biases of AI: its suggestions are based on massive amounts of data, which leads it to favour dominant stylistic codes, to prioritise familiarity over boldness, and to marginalise less represented aesthetics and traditions.
Luup is a short version of Human in the loop. A flexible and adaptable piece, this 15-minute work questions our freedom within an oppressive, insidious and often absurd structure governed by algorithms.
